-american violence over seas there is word tonight ha the fbi has exposed an apparent homegrown terror plot in chicago involving an american teenager. the feds arresting an d man who tried to detonate a car bomb outside a chicago bar. what he apparently department know was that the fbi was in on it from the start and the bomb was a fake. nbc's john yang is in our chicago newsroom with more. was anyone put at risk here? >> reporter: law enforcement officials stressed to nbc news that no one was ever at risk. the bomb was a phony. the suspect, 18-year-old adal daud had no weapons training and is not a member or connected with any terrorist group -- international terrorist group. according to this 35-page criminal complaint he was spotted by the fbi online talking jihad and talking about attacking americans. an undercover fbi agent got in touch with him. in the course of their discussions he came up with this plot to attack a target in chago. and last night, according to the fbi, he was given a phony bomb, drove it in a jeep cherokee to a bar in downtown chicago, parked it outside, walked

in benghazi, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, kate. we understand that an fbi team of special agents has arrived here in benghazi. they're keeping a low profile for security reasons and are expected to at some point begin investigating what exactly happened at that consulate. they're going to sift through the ashes and look for any clues that can identify any individuals involved in that attack. we know that the u.s. military has deployed its resources, including drones and other intelligence gathering mechanisms to try to keep an eye and ear out for any of these people involved. they're getting a lot of cooperation from the libyan government. the libyan government says that they believe this was a pre-planned attack, not an outburst of spontaneous violence. and they're also saying that they have four individuals in custody that they are questioning who may have possibly important information that could benefit the americans. they also have several other individuals under surveillance. but as we've seen in the past, one of the more difficult things here on the groun
